Bridging the Orgasm Gap: Yoga in the Bedroom

Several months ago I wrote a few articles about how practicing yoga can enhance your sex life. Whether by increasing flexibility, facilitating concentration and in-the-moment thought, or providing the exercise you need to feel good about your body, yoga can be the basis for bolstered bedroom behavior in a variety of ways. I wrote about bringing the deep, meditative yogic breath to your sexual encounters as a way to fully experience and heighten each sensation. I wrote about yoga’s teachings on balance and the importance of finding both emotional and physical stability in each area of your life. I wrote about the health benefits of a workout that combines cardio exercise, muscular endurance, and body awareness. Finally, I wrote about how you can adapt the yoga poses you practice on your mat to extra-hot sex poses in bed (or elsewhere). This article offers another yoga-sex position for you to add to your repertoire.

Bridge Pose

The previous positions I described were focused on vaginal intercourse. While penetration – when done in the right way – certainly allows for sexual pleasure, a majority of women only achieve orgasm through clitoral stimulation. The Bridge Pose caters to this population, arranging your body in an ideal position for oral sex – also called cunnilingus. Because this position requires you to maintain some level of balance, I recommend that you have a small, firm pillow or a folded blanket handy in order to facilitate maximum comfort, stability and pleasure.

Begin by lying flat on your back with your hands by your hips. Take some time to establish your breathing pattern, focusing on each sensation that passes through your body and clearing your mind of distractions.

Next, bend your knees and place your feet flat on the surface below you. Your ankles should be in line with your knees, slightly wider than hip-distance apart and parallel. When you are ready, press your feet and arms into the floor, raising your pubic bone sky-ward until your body is in a straight line from knees to nose. If you want, you can clasp your hands under your body and use the extra leverage to shift onto the tops of your shoulders. You can also choose to insert your prop under your lower back at this time.

With your legs spread open and your hips tilted upward, your vulva will be exposed in a way that few other positions allow. Your partner will be given new angles with which to caress your clitoris and more direct access to your G-spot if he or she uses a tongue or fingers to search for it. The added height actually makes pleasure-giving easier, and the exertion of maintaining the Bridge position will heighten your sensations and strengthen your core! Pleasure and pilates combine in this easy yoga hold to make oral sex even more intense than standard cunnilingus. Experiment with holding your hips at different heights and adding or removing the prop.

As every good yoga instructor constantly repeats, don’t forget to breathe. And obviously – report back with your own suggestions and modifications!

Mixing yoga and pleasure. Would not have put those two together.

Well, then I definitely recommend you try it! I think you may be pleasantly surprised. Yoga teaches us to be present in the sensations of the moment and open both our minds and bodies to new possibilities - both of which are practices that lend themselves to better orgasms!
