Religion And Relationships: How Does This Work?

Dating Coach Joann Cohen discusses how differing religions can affect relationships.

Joann:
What happens if you meet somebody and he is of a different faith? Can you make a relationship work?

You can make relationships work. My family has worked, for example. My dad was Jewish. My mom was Christian and what they did, and I think it’s a great way to make different faiths work together, is we were raised with both faiths.

We celebrated all the holidays. We had Hanukkah. We had Christmas. We had Easter. We had Passover.

We learned and appreciated the great things that each faith had. We didn’t see one as better or right. We simply learned about it and that allowed us actually to learn about a lot of different religions and then my family made their choice on what faith they wanted to follow.

But we are really very open-minded and I think that’s a great way when you find somebody of a different faith that you want to have a relationship with.

Are you willing to compromise? Can you bring both faiths in? If you don’t know about that faith can you learn about it instead of thinking is it right or is it wrong, what do I need to learn about it? What’s special and unique about that faith?

Are you both willing to compromise? And then you have to have that kind of conversation about children – what faith would the children be raised in. Does it have to be one, can it be both?

Can it be something that you both agree on that’s not even one of the religions you belong to? It’s a conversation you need to have, though, before you make that final decision.
