Taking the Next Step and Moving in Together

Your relationship is going strong and you have decided that you want to spend as much waking and sleeping time together as possible. So you are taking the big step and moving in together. Depending on your situation, it could be the transition before marriage. But are you ready?

It is time for the meshing of belongings, sharing of spaces and, if having a roommate is foreign to you, compromising. Your mate will have habits that may be sweet in the beginning but turn into annoyances over the years. You may not think dirty socks left in secret “love corners” around your home are all that cute after years of cohabitation. Your beauty products surrounding every inch of the bathroom counter reminds the one you love of how happy that he is that you are around, but keep in mind that things like these may turn into argument topics before you know it.

You are happy now. You are quick to share the remote control and give up the last piece of cake. Can you make it a priority to always be thoughtful and considerate of your mate?

You flirt over large brown moving boxes and giggle as you bump hands when carefully wrapping up fragile items. Your new closet is where Kate Spade will meet Michael Jordan and Ralph Lauren will share room with Ann Taylor. He will complain about the number of shoes that you have because he is suppose to but will secretly adore at least one of your sexiest pairs on you.

And there will always be those couple of items that you can’t wait to weed out of your household when your loved one isn’t looking.

I moved in with my husband prior to getting married and as we talked and laughed in the excitement of having our first place together, I got my first glimpse of the items that I couldn’t wait to discard. The first was the Money Mill. This was an awful looking gray, plastic cylinder that ran on batteries and when you dropped the coins in, they were magically sorted into the appropriate stack waiting for the paper rolls. Always, there were random coins in the sides where they had slipped through and gotten stuck. Not only did you have to count out the coins to wrap in the paper rolls, but you also had to get rolls from the bank when you were out. This thing was more high maintenance than my Italian leather handbag that I cleaned and conditioned regularly. I couldn’t wait for that thing to break. Unfortunately, I would be waiting a while because it was built better than any retail item I had ever owned.

The second thing was a bright red car VHS automatic re-winder. It was uglier than the Money Mill. It was bright shiny red so you always could see it and it had a long black power cord so you could plug it in, never fearing that you might be out of batteries. That thing never made it out of our box. Luckily, VHS tapes were becoming obsolete and essentially, so was the hideous re-winder.

I love the memories of our first place. Make your memories and keep them close to you heart.
