Women, Sex and Water

The Mermaid has long, wavy hair; its as if the waves of the ocean themselves undulate on her head, echoing Medusa, that slight edge, alluding to the smooth curves of a snake, that naughty fellow and to a woman's body in all its fluid enticement.

The Sirens, too, of folklore, the downfall of many a brave man. How they call out to lonely sailors in the night, their voices not unlike the sorrowful call of something ancient, primitive, majestic, that nature song; the songs of dolphins, whales and manatees, of mother nature herself, dark, mysterious, deep.

Sex and water seem to be made of the same stuff in our unconscious minds. We refer to cuts of beef and to human beings as "juicy," and describe our longings as "steamy" (the combination of heat and water), to our blood as boiling in anger or lust, to our loins, if we are women, well, quite simply, as "wet." In the Billie Holiday Song 'Fine and Mellow' Billie sings, "love is just like a faucet, it turns off and on..." and in a new version of this, our modern day vernacular bemoans the changing nature of love by calling people "hot and cold."

We are made of the stuff, we consist of it. Having crawled achingly, in measured steps out of the ocean in our evolutionary scramble toward the top of the food chain, we still long for it, looking back over our shoulders in a sad homage to where we once were, toward our true mother, the collective womb of humanity. Sunsets on the beach symbolize unity, romantic bliss, togetherness, peaceful love.

Destination weddings on white sand, the ocean licking at our heels; these things are sexy and romantic, bring us a sense of fulfillment, joy.

Taking a hot shower or bath with your partner can infuse your sex/love life with a bit of the sea. Feeling the sensuality of water, heat and soap on skin can open up your senses, allow you to let down your defenses, lose your self consciousness and just "dive in" to the experience. It will literally loosen up your muscles and this will cause a chain reaction of unwinding and opening up.

Take water into yourself, for the more we drink of the stuff, the cleaner we are inside, the better health we experience, our skin gets detoxified, our intestines do their jobs more efficiently.

Take water into your love life, showering, bathing and swimming in a sensual way. Find ways to go skinny dipping; bring candles into the bathroom...

Since it is our natural essence to slide into warm water, we owe it to ourselves to enjoy it as often as possible.

Those mirrored ceilings and water beds of the 1970's may have been a passing fancy, but they sure did the trick.
