Jeanne Marrazzo, MD, MPH, Infectious Disease, STD/HIV Prevention Epidemiology explains what a sexually transmitted infection is & what women need to know about them.

Dr. Marrazzo:
Sexually transmitted infections are just like they sound. They are infections that you get from having sex. We think of them typically as infections like chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis, trichomonas, or trich. Those are sort of the big heavy hitters: HPV infection or human papillomavirus, and then finally herpes. Those six are probably the major infections that we are talking about. The common thread that these infections have is that you generally get them through unprotected sex, and that can be vaginal sex, that can be anal sex, and it can be oral sex. So there are different ways to get different infections and different ways to protect yourself from getting each of those infections.
