Soy! Oh Boy!

Tongues have been wagging a lot about soy isoflavones (plant-based compounds with estrogen-like properties) with the most disturbing reports linking high doses to genetic damage and stimulation of estrogen receptors to promote breast cancer.

So, do you need to be worried if your current menopause diet includes lots of soy? Evidently, the answer is NO!

According to a newly published study in the Menopause Journal, unconjugated forms of soy isoflavones are safe and well tolerated at daily doses as high as 900 mg/day. (Unconjugated forms are more readily absorbed into the bloodstream.)

(HealthDay News) -- Having diabetes shouldn't cause your child to miss out on the fun of sleepovers and school field trips.

Prepare your diabetic child for time away from home with these recommendations from the American Diabetes Association:

* Pack a bag with everything your child will need, including insulin, syringes, a meter, test strips and a log book. Pack extras of everything.
* If traveling for several hours, pack several snacks, juices and glucose tablets.

Bio-Identical Hormones

I didn't need to have a hearing aid sitting in my hairdressers chair to hear all the hype about bio-identical hormones and how great these women were feeling! I mean that is where women talk about everything from relationships to health conditions to Botox. They were excited, glowing and I wondered why? Was it some new facial or something?

HI, I really need help!. I need fertility treatment but I don't have insurance. Is there any hospital in MI or Detroit that can allow me to pay monthly. I am fed up and I don't know what to do. I can't afford any insurance but I will definitely appreciate monthly paymentdirectly to the hospital that is willingly to treat me.

The Unflappable Fan Co.

I started experiencing hot flashes about 5 years ago. Since then, I was always in search of a nice hand fan to use when I was out in public. Not the electric type. They’re a little weird to pull out in a restaurant or theater. I wanted something that was discreet and pretty. I could find a few Asian designs and sandlewood of course. But after a short time, they would fall apart. I said to my husband, Jack, there’s a need for a nice fan. Something I could carry in my purse and not be embarrassed to use. He totally agreed and the whole project began.

Burning Tongue Syndrome, aka Burning Mouth Syndrome

Burning Tongue Syndrome, aka Burning Mouth Syndrome, feels like your entire mouth has been scalded. It impedes speech and makes eating and sleeping difficult. It occurs mostly in post-menopausal women. I went to three doctors (my dentist, who sent me to an oral surgeon ... neither of whom came up with this problem ... then to the head of oral medicine at UCLA who finally diagnosed it) before one of them came up with this diagnosis. Here is what the Mayo Clinic has to say about it:

With so much information circulating on menopause, it’s sometimes difficult to cut through the noise to glean the information you really need to know. Here’s five facts that you may not know about menopause from the president and chief executive officer of the National Association of Nurse Practitioners in Women's Health.

1. Menopause only lasts a day – at least clinically speaking. That day happens when a woman has missed her 5period for 12 consecutive months.

2. Weight gain is typicalof menopausal women especially around the middle.

Night sweats and hot flashes—how my hormone imbalance led to night after night of drenched sheets

Have you ever heard the expression “men sweat, but women glow?”

Obviously, whoever coined that phrase wasn’t a woman dealing with menopause and night sweats.

Looking back, my night sweats were clearly part of my going through perimenopause in my early 40s. But at the time, neither my physician nor I were making that connection. He believed that it was a side effect of the medications I was taking for irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS.
