Vitamin D vs. Sunscreen

The sunshine vitamin seems to do more than help build strong bones. A study in the Archives of Internal Medicine found that men with low vitamin D were at a higher risk for heart attacks.

Apparently, other studies also show that low vitamin d is linked with cancers of the breast, ovary, prostate, stomach, bladder, esophagus, kidney and lung. If you don’t get enough vitamin D, you may also be at risk for high blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, periodontal disease, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, macular degeneration, mental illness and chronic pain. Sitting in the Shade is No Protection from the Sun

Allow me to be your poster child for what not to do when outside.

I'm the first to advise all to wear sun screen, not to sunbathe in direct sunlight with no protectant and to generally avoid prolonged exposure to the sn.

So off I trot, out to our deck having slathered my kids in a very high factor sunscreen about 15 minutes before hand. The huge umbrella is up and I sit beneath it, watching my children splash in their little pool. A couple of hours and a nice lunch later, I put everyone down for naps and continue my day.

Ok, maybe not the best news EVER. But I suffer from these horrid little creatures and have painful bouts several times a year that last about 10 days every time. Even highly touted creams like Abreva have done nothing for me.

Oily, blemished skin

I'm 20 years old and I live in a high humidity country. Since I was 13 years I always remember having an oily skin with the usual pustule on my forehead. I though that it was a common reaction when you're growing up. Now that I'm 20 years, my skin condition seems that it's getting worse. I get pustules and papules on my cheek area especially on one particular side of my face and on my jawline. As I just finished my Aesthetics course, I learned that the cheek area give an accurate glimpse into any respiratory distress while the jawline reflects the state of your teeth and gums.

NEW SCIENTIST: Skin-Tone Gene Could Predict Cancer Risk

Most people with pale skin, red hair or freckles know to slather on extra sun block to ward off skin cancer. A trio of new studies reinforces that notion – but also suggests that genes, not pigmentation, may provide the ultimate guide to who is most likely to get skin cancer after sitting in the sun.

Researchers in Iceland and Australia studying thousands of people with melanoma and other skin cancers have pinpointed a gene affecting both a person's skin tone and their chances of getting skin cancer.
