Dr. Emdur shares if long-term stress can lead to adrenal fatigue.

Dr. Emdur:
Well, you know in our high, rapid-pace society we are under a lot of stress all the time and our cortisol levels are high all the time, but there comes a period when you burn out your adrenal glands and your cortisol levels now drop. When your cortisol levels are low, you know, you have lack of energy, problems with depression, mood swings, and you know, you are just not on your game.

The problem is, you know, a simple blood test will not make the diagnosis because to pick it up on a standard physician’s office that you have adrenal insufficiency you know, you have to be almost ready to die. Alternative physicians, integrative physicians that I consider myself to be, anti-aging physicians, we look at salivary cortisol levels over a 24-hour period and when you wake up in the morning your cortisol levels are high and during the day they continue to drop, while some patients stay wake up in the morning and their cortisol levels are already low and they stay low during the day.

And on a salivary test we interpret that as something called adrenal fatigue and there’s ways we can treat that, which include vitamin C, herbal products to support your adrenal glands, even taking some adrenal extract from foreseen population and even if you need to be on supplemental cortisone.

If you suspect that you have adrenal fatigue, I would see a board-certified physician who has been trained by the American Board of Anti-Aging Medicine. They are trained in how to recognize and treat this condition.
