Dr. Lazarus:

Iodine is an essential building block for thyroid hormone and therefore, and a pregnant woman needs somewhat more thyroid hormone than normal, and so that’s why you need a little bit more thyroid, more iodine, than normal because pregnant woman has got to supply the fetus with iodine and thyroid hormone. So it’s a vital constituent for the pregnant woman and for the thyroid gland.
