Families used to have to resort to the budget hotels and motels with characters on the walls and chicken fingers on the menu when they traveled. Sure, there may be one Madeleine-esque kid in a posh hotel, but in the past that was probably it. Now, however, is a different story.

Families are traveling and do not want to lower their standard of living while doing it. And some of the most luxurious hotels across the country are cashing in on this idea and openly cater to families. Kids are not only welcome at these three top resorts, they are encouraged, celebrated, and entertained.

Check out the amenities at these three old school resorts with very "new school" offerings:

The Tides Inn, Chesapeake Bay, Virginia

Opened more than 65 years ago, The Tides Inn has become well known for being a great site for multi-generations. They even have a Family Reunion Specialist to help plan reunions and family get-togethers on a grand scale.

The resort evokes Old South charm by greeting guests with genuine smiles, complimentary cookies and fresh squeezed lemonade upon arrival. There are outdoor activities for the whole family at The Tides Inn which include everything from sailing lessons, complimentary bike rides and 18 holes of golf.

And if the days are fun, try hanging out at the fire pit by night for complimentary s’mores. They are even served on silver platters!

Room prices at the Tides Inn vary, but current family packages start at $379 per night.

The Breakers Palm Beach, Palm Beach Florida

The Breakers Palm Beach is a 540-room Italian-Renaissance style resort located in the heart of Palm Beach, Florida.

It is truly elegant and one of America’s most legendary resort destinations, with 140 acres of prime oceanfront property. Founded in 1896, The Breakers has retained the elegance of the past but now is also thoroughly updated with every convenience a modern family expects.

This tropical oasis boasts 36 holes of championship golf, ½ mile stretch of gorgeous private beach, four ocean-front pools, two fitness centers, nine restaurants and a fully-stocked family entertainment center, and so much more.

They even have a family restaurant that offers supervised childcare so that Mom and Dad can eat in peace and the kids can have fun playing nearby. Genius!

In low season (typically the summer) rates at this uber-luxurious resort can drop to $200 per night with lots of extras thrown in. In high season (around Christmas), expect to pay closer to $400 per night for the most inexpensive room.

The Cloister at Sea Island, GA

Discerning guests have been visiting The Cloister, which is spread along 1,000 acres of a barrier island beach, for the last 85 years.

This opulent resort includes five miles of private beaches, three championship golf courses, a shooting school, hunting preserve, tennis and squash courts, supervised children’s programming and five star dining.

They also have an award-winning 65,000 square-foot Spa (Spa at Sea Island) which was awarded a Forbes Five Star rating.

The Cloister makes it easy for families to be able to get out and enjoy the splendid Georgian coast.

Rooms prices vary seasonally but start around $250.
