Lisa Marie Schwartz, MD, is the Medical Director of Integrative Medicine for The Roy and Patricia Disney Family Cancer Center at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center. She received her medical education at the Medical University of South Carolina. She completed residencies in both internal medicine and radiation oncology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. After practicing radiation oncology for a number of years, Dr. Schwartz was motivated by her patients’ use of complementary medicine to learn more about it. She completed a master’s degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine at Emperor’s College and associate fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona under Dr. Andrew Weil. She is nationally board certified in radiation oncology, internal medicine, acupuncture, and Chinese medicine.
Her clinical interests include the integration of conventional medicine with evidence-based complementary therapies aimed at improving a patient’s tolerance of cancer treatment and overall outcomes. Her training gave her the tools to apply the principles of Chinese medicine and acupuncture to support cancer patients throughout their treatment and recovery. She uses mind-body interventions with her patients and their families to relieve stress and anxiety. Her recommendations often include advice on nutritional strategies, lifestyle changes, and complementary therapies that have an impact on a patient’s survival and quality of life.
The entire second floor of the Disney Family Cancer Center is dedicated to providing a full range of support services for cancer patients and their caregivers including complementary therapies noted above and more conventional services such as physical therapy, nutritional counseling, psychosocial support, and research just to name a few.
