Eva Ritvo MD
Dr. Ritvo is a Vice Chair for Professional and Community Development at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and has a secondary appointment in the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, Miller School of Medicine.
Dr. Ritvo completed her residency training at New York Hospital Payne Whitney Clinic/ Cornell and received undergraduate and medical degrees from University of California, Los Angeles. She is considered an expert in family therapy and is the lead author of the Concise Guide to Marital and Family Therapy and has written the chapters on Family and Couples Therapy for the leading psychiatric textbooks. Dr. Ritvo makes frequent public speaking and TV appearances on local news channels and has appeared on the TODAY show and a special segment on EXTRA called “Beauty and the Brain”. She had a long running TV segment called “Real Relationship”. She is often quoted in the Miami Herald, and has also been quoted in the New York Times, New York Times magazine, USA Today, the Wall Street Journal, WebMD, SELF magazine, and others. Dr. Ritvo is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association and a member of the American College of Psychiatry and on the Board of the International Society of Sports Psychiatry. She has experience treating high profile athletes and their families.
Dr. Ritvo is the co-director of the Physician’s Development Program which was written up in Psychology Today. The program evaluates physicians and monitors physicians who have been identified for disruptive behaviors. She has lectured all over the US and parts of Canada helping physicians’ enhance their clinical skills particularly when managing difficult patients.
Dr. Ritvo is chair of the Psychotherapy Advisory Committee, which oversees the psychotherapy component of the residency program. In 2001, Dr. Ritvo developed the Annual Humanitarian Award for outstanding contribution in the field of mental health. The first recipient was Mrs. Tipper Gore and second was the former Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher. Dr. Ritvo is active in state and national organizations and has served as the Secretary and Treasurer for the Florida Psychiatric Society.
Dr. Ritvo has lectured extensively in the US, Canada, Europe and Mexico to dermatologists and other cosmetic surgeons on how to handle their cosmetic patients and on the meaning and importance of beauty. She is co-author of a book called The Beauty Prescription released by McGraw Hill in August 2008. She has written chapters and articles on body dysmorprhic disorder, managing patient expectations and more. She has provided consultations to Galderma, OrthoNeurtogena, Neurtorgena, Steifel and Allergan.
Dr. Ritvo has 2 daughters, ages 18 and 13. She helped create and sustain the annual Cushman School Health Fair to introduce children to important health issues such as good nutrition, proper diet and rest, safety techniques and smoking prevention. Dr. Ritvo is also a “Godmother” at Temple Israel and helps children attend religious school when financial resources are lacking. Dr. Ritvo is on the board of the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation in South Florida. She is an avid tennis player and tennis fan and has created the Marissa Nestor Tennis Invitational to honor her daughter who has Cerebral Palsy and to raise money for the United Cerebral Palsy Foundation.
