Mary describes how her life was changed by uterine cancer.

Mary:
I have always been a person that has lived life to the fullest, and my friends commented on that. That in that sense, cancer didn’t change me because I have always gone for it, gone for that brass ring and not afraid to live a full life. But what did change is I had certain goals in my life, and one of my goals was I really wanted to travel around the world to work. I really wanted to help women in developing countries, and my thought was that I’d keep growing my business. I own a public relations firm. I’d keep growing my business until maybe I was 55, and then that’s kind of what I would do in the twilight years of my business, and I just realized, "What am I waiting for?" and in my late 40s, my mid to late 40s, I started living my dream, and I am now living my dream and it’s terrific.

So, it has also given me a lot more empathy for people in general and for other, it gives me an understanding of what people go through because you don’t know. One of my girlfriends had back surgery, and after everything was over with that, she said to me, she says, “You know, of my four best friends, two of you were there for me,” and I asked her a few questions and what came out is, the two of us who she said were there for her, had had surgery, and the other two hadn’t.

So the other two didn’t know how, because they’d come over, they’ll see you looking like this, and they’ll think you look great. And, "Oh, she is doing fine," and they go back to their daily life while those of us have surgery, we know, okay, check in again tomorrow or check in again on Saturday, whatever.
