AUDIO: Dr. William Parker - Can Fibroids Grow Back After Myomectomy Surgery?

Print Text Size

Do fibroids grow back when they are removed by myomectomy?

Dr. William Parker:
Once a fibroid is removed, that fibroid will never grow back; it’s gone forever. There is a recurrence rate, or I should say a new appearance rate, where if you take out fibroids from a woman, new fibroids can grow, but it’s actually a very small number.

This was a study done in, I think, the 70s where they followed younger women in their 20s, about 25 years old, followed them for about 20 years. In women that had had one fibroid removed, only 11% of them required another operation in those 20 years.

For women that had had multiple fibroids removed at the same operation, 25% of them required another operation in their lifetime. So that the numbers are small. I mean, that 90% of women don’t need fibroids if you’ve only had one, and 75% of women don’t need another operation if you’ve had more than one fibroid removed.

Todd:
Now, Dr. Parker, you just gave us the benefits of myomectomy for fibroids, but what about the risk factors that women can face?
