There was a study that stated that weight loss may be harmful. I’m sure this title will bring joy to some people and confusion to many others. It will bring joy to everyone who is not interested in losing weight and wants an excuse to continue with their unhealthy lifestyle. It will bring confusion to many others who have heard that being overweight or obese are the cause of major health problems for many people today.

The Reuters article titled “Long-term weight loss may be harmful to health” released on Tuesday, September 7, 2010, brings up a process that happens when people lose weight. According to a study from Kyungpook National University in Daegu in South Korea, chemical pollutants are stored in fatty tissues in the body and when people experience weight loss these harmful chemicals that are linked to chronic illnesses like diabetes, hypertension, coronary heart disease, periodontal disease or rheumatoid arthritis may be released. The chemicals are called persistent organic pollutants (POPs).

It is important for people who are overweight or obese to lose weight to reduce the risks of several chronic illnesses. This article is a wake-up call to anyone who is losing weight to understand your body is getting rid of harmful toxins that are stored in your body when you are overweight. More simply, your body is detoxing when you are losing weight. I find this to be a critical fact as my patients are losing weight. Whenever I have patients on a weight reduction plan I always make sure they understand the importance of releasing toxins from their pee, poop, breath, and sweat. The old time naturopathic treatments always included treatments to make sure all of these important bodily functions were working and fully functioning to support the healing processes of the body. I do the same with all my patients especially those that are focused on weight loss. We as a community have forgotten the importance of simple health issues and this creates the growing need for naturopathic doctors, lectures, classes, webinars and books to reintroduce basic concepts into our awareness.

Don’t be mislead by the article title--weight loss is important to help keep you healthy; you just need to remember you are detoxing while you are losing weight. So be sure to incorporate detoxification principles into your weight loss as well.

Really good points here. Losing weight is not just about the outer beauty - the goal needs to be about long-term health. Certain diets do focus on this, but many miss the point. Thanks for the info.
