Weigh Lost Problems - Make Sure It's Not a Medical Condition

I have patients that come into my office or call me on the phone frustrated because they have tried everything and cannot seem to lose weight. They are usually eating well and exercising at least 2-3 times per week yet the scale or the inches remain unchanged. This prompts my first question, which is “when is the last time you have had a full physical and your blood drawn?” Many have not had this done in quite some time.

Physical exams are important for having base line information about all of your body systems and can catch problems early. Blood work is an objective measure for some disease processes. The results automatically give information about how the body is functioning. It can explain why someone is having difficulty losing weight or inches in some instances. It can also explain why patients are experiencing other symptoms.

For example, metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes, diabetics or thyroid conditions are a few common conditions that can be diagnosed with simple blood work. Metabolic syndrome, pre-diabetes and diabetes all affect blood sugar level, insulin and cortisol levels. These hormones affect people’s ability to release fat from the body. The thyroid gland is responsible for the metabolism of the body so when it is not functioning correctly it affects the ability of the body to regulate metabolism. This allows your physician (naturopathic or conventional) to look at the true problem of why weight or inch release is not happening. Once the underlying condition has been addressed through naturopathic or conventional methods the ability to lose weight can become much easier. If you are interested in finding out if you need blood work done contact your naturopathic physician or conventional physician to have test done
