In 2012, I Want To Be ...

Anybody else tired of New Year's resolutions?

I have never taken the whole idea too seriously, truth be told. It seemed to me that if you wanted to make some changes, you'd just ... make them. Or not. But the calendar didn't really seem to enter into it, to my mind.

But maybe there is some merit to the idea. Perhaps, like dubbing birthdays the day to make sure to celebrate someone's existence, Valentine's Day as a day to make a point of expressing one's love, Mother's Day and Father's Day as times to honor one's parents, New Year's is as good a time as any to just decide to make the changes and get on it.

Of course, all the special dates I mentioned have their naysayers as well. They say, these days are arbitrary, made up.

But really, if something is meaningful for you, by all means, go with it. And if that means the New Year is the time you choose to make some alterations in your fabric, who am I to discourage it?

If I were going to make a New Year's resolution, what would it be?

See, this is where it gets dicey for me. Any New Year's resolution is a resolution I've already made, every day of this past year and the year before that and the year before that and ...

I resolve to eat healthy.

For me, that means sticking to a low carb diet. Avoiding gluten. Staying with my supplements. Enjoying my kefir.

I resolve to get lots of rest.

That one is tricky. I am a night owl by nature, who just got cable TV.

I used to take frequent naps through the day when Chronic Fatigue Syndrome was at its worst. I find the idea of an afternoon rest now ... off-putting. Perhaps I am afraid it is somehow giving in? Probably. Even when I had to nap every day I felt like it was giving in. Knowing that was not true never quite made the feeling go away.

I resolve to spend time with my family.

This is easy to do. I work at home, and so does my husband. My kids living at home are around alot. We are together every day. The ones not at home we stay in touch with as regularly as we can. Facebook makes that easier, and fun.

I resolve to become everything I can be.

This one used to feel like a joke when I was very sick with CFS but it was perhaps even more important then than it is now. I felt that what I was and what I had going for me was so little.

The small hope that burned within was that I would one day become ... more. As my recovery from CFS has continued, I find hope comes more easily and I believe that I can be like a tree and branch out further this year.

I spent 15 years losing the battle against Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Four years ago, I found treatment that worked for me, and now I am making a comeback.

I will be 40 this year coming and I believe I must celebrate my life even though one may say I made mistakes. I am who I am because of my mistakes, out of every mistakes I have learnt valuable lessons which have made me wiser and have caused me to see life in a new light. I celebrate my past and look forward to the surprIses that lie ahead for me in 2012
