In this edition of EmpowHER's, "HER Daily Dose", Bailey Mosier examines a study that asks the question, "Are wealthier people less ethical?"
Hi, I’m Bailey Mosier and this is your EmpowHER HER Daily Dose.
We can all probably think of a few examples where the rich and famous acted as if rules didn’t apply to them … and some recent research may shed light as to why.
University of California, Berkeley researchers found that people who considered themselves wealthy were more likely than those less wealthy to have unethical decision-making tendencies, be dishonest in a negotiation, or skirt the rules to boost their chances of winning a prize.
Through tests both in and out of laboratory walls, researchers found the wealthy are more egocentric and more attuned to one's own desires and needs in the moment and therefore may not always perceive the law as potentially applicable to them.
In a chicken or the egg conundrum, researchers wondered which came first – the wealth or the egotistical behavior. They weren’t certain of that but they were confident that wealthier people are more likely to skirt the law or make unethical decisions.
