The Blue Zones Book Club: Preface

So first of all, welcome to the first book club blog I have ever attempted! For the month of July we will be reading "The Blue Zone: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest" by Dan Buettner. This is an intriguing look at what factors contribute to creating a long and happy life by studying people in areas of the world where there are a greater percentage of centenarians (people who have lived to be 100 or more). I actually love to read the introduction or preface of all the books. I really enjoyed this preface, which is called Get Ready to Change Your Life.

It was funny that after reading the preface I actually felt like the words spoke to me about how I have started to change my life. I connected with the story of Sayoko, one of the Japanese reporters on the team in Okinawa. She had a high powered position in her company and was well respected by her colleagues. She was an essential part of the team--so good that when Dan Buettner returned five years later he requested her as part of the team again. When he could not reach her he went out of his way to track her down. He found her in a small village, married with two children. She had given up her high powered position in the big city for a simpler life. When he asked her why she had made such a drastic change -she told him that she had listened, really listened to the words of a 104-year-old woman who talked about what was important to her in her life. As she thought about this centenarian's life she decided it was time to make changes to give her the life she envisioned for herself. It was a much simpler life.

This story had impacted on me because I have also been making big changes in my life to create more simplicity. I love all the variety that I have in my work but I also realize that I was sacrificing personal activities that are important to me as well. Part of living a long life is living a happy and peaceful life as well. Spending too much time on any one segment of my life causes stress and imbalance. In the preface I learned that growing old contently is at least in some part due to keeping it simple.

What did you get out of preface? Let me know!
