for 2013 make a commitment for change and better health Andrey Malinkin/PhotoSpin

The New Year is a time when our thoughts reflect on what we would like to achieve or change in the coming year.

It is important to take time to think about what you would like to change in your life and in your health.

I often recommend looking at several areas of your life to make change.

Examples of areas are health, lifestyle changes, financial concerns, spiritual connection, stress management, relationships with family or friends, just to name a few.

Oftentimes we refer to changes in these areas as New Year’s resolutions.

According to the Free Dictionary, the definition of "resolution" is "the act of an instance or resolving or the something resolved or determined; decision."

I don’t know really understand how resolution really causes any time of change. There is no action required in resolutions.

If you really want to have change in the New Year then I think it would better to choose a word that requires action to create a different path in the New Year.

I think a better word to describe making a change in the New Year would be "commitment".

The Free Dictionary states that a commitment is defined as "a pledge to do or a state of being bound emotionally or intellectually to a course of action or to another person or persons."

In one of my favorite meditations by Davidji of The Chopra Center, he says that when you commit, you take action. It is when you commit to take action that your life changes.

Ben Michaelis, Ph.D says that true commitment to change requires three things:
vision, promise and energy. I tend to agree.

As you reflect on what you want in the New Year you create a vision.

The promise is your personal commitment to yourself that you will work for the new goal.

The energy is the action put into your vision that creates the goals and health you want.

In this New Year of 2013, I am committing to help you cultivate health by writing articles and creating tools that move you from vision to action.

It will be an exciting New Year for us cultivating health together, and I am looking forward to it.
