New Years Health Resolutions - Are You Really Ready to Start Yours?

In January, people often make resolutions and goals to becoming healthier. I think that is a great way to start a new year. Health goals can include changing your diet, or eating different types of foods, starting or changing your exercise plan, beginning meditation, changing the medications you are taking, creating stress management techniques, taking classes (kickboxing, yoga, dance classes), walking on your lunch hour with co-workers or friends, and many more activities.

Whenever we start new health goals I think it is important to think about working with a qualified expert, doctor, coach or trainer to make sure your body or spirit will be able to accomplish the goal the mind has set for it. While you might not think it is necessary to share goals with your doctor, when you go on a two-week cleanse purchased from your health food store you might not realize that the natural pills that you are taking are causing you to become constipated or nauseated when you are taking them along with your meal of fried chicken. This is because you are not following the correct eating plan to go along with the pills you are taking. Or you start a 45-minute daily exercise plan to lose weight and help control your blood sugars and it is working so well that you are feeling faint in the middle of the day. You are faint because your blood sugars are responding so well that you don’t need to take as much medication and since you didn’t tell your doctor about your new exercise program she didn’t adjust them for you. Or let's say you decided to completely change your diet and after a few days on the new diet you realize that you are anxious, irritated or short fused with everyone in your life. You did not expect your emotions to short circuit as part of this dietary change. If you had your naturopathic doctor as part of your team she could have prepared you perhaps given you herbs that calm the nerves, or stress management techniques to manage your emotions so your goal would not have been such a problem as you transition to a healthier way to eat.

I love when people set health goals for the new year or anytime they are ready to become more healthy. After eight years in practice I have learned that consulting with a qualified professional in the area of your health goal can reduce the risk of failure or unexpected symptoms or problems attaining your goal. If you are in great health consulting with a health professional is a precaution but if you are not as healthy as your think consulting with a health professional might make the difference between achieving your goal or failing at it.
