New Year’s resolutions are part of each New Year. People set lofty goals about how they will change their life in the new year. Common resolutions are to lose weight, create a healthier lifestyle, get in shape, find a new job or change their financial situation. The truth is, by the end of January many people have not started their resolutions or they have created a resolution that was unattainable and they could not keep it and have given up in just four weeks.

We all want to create better lives for ourselves, but I think creating realistic goals for yourself instead of lofty resolutions is the way to go to be successful. I think the first step in setting any type of goal is to have a passion for the goal you are setting for yourself. You are more likely to succeed if you have a strong desire to do so. Next, give yourself enough time to see your goal to completion. People tend to want to have things now and so they set up aggressive time lines that are not realistic and then beat themselves up when they don’t complete it on time, or they might give up too soon. Understand that without behavioral change or a change in your thought process success will be low. The most sustaining goals occur because we change our habits or the way we see a situation. Give yourself permission to slip up a couple of times in the process. Forgive yourself when you falter, and start over the next day. Finally, review your goals consistently and make adjustments to make sure you are on track.

In the next article I will give an example of a patient who successfully used the steps I detailed here and lost weight over a 6-month period of time. Check it out to see how it can work for you. These suggestions work with any type of goal; of course I chose a health-related goal to write about because that is what I do with most patients. Have a successful goal oriented 2011.
