Rotavirus

Rotavirus is the most common cause of acute gastroenteritis in young children worldwide. The symptoms of vomiting and severe diarrhea can lead to dehydration. Severe dehydration is a serious complication and a major cause of childhood deaths in developing countries. Generally, the first dose of rotavirus vaccine is given at 2 months of age and the second dose is given at 4 months of age. A third dose is given at 6 months only if the healthcare provider deems it necessary. According to the CDC’s guidelines, vaccination should not be started at the age of 15 months and the final dose in the series should be given no later than 8 months of age.
