Yellow Fever

I got yellow fever when I was eight. I turned yellow with jaundice, stayed sick for almost 20 days, and remained weak months after that. There was a point when my parents lost hope for me to make it through. I was put on strict diet of rice, rice and more rice with a little buttermilk and that was all. By the time I recovered I swore I would never look at another rice grain in my life. But of course, I was only eight and how would I know how my life would be up until now and I would have to eat tons and tons of rice through the years and get addicted? Anyway, the point I am trying to make here is that I got yellow fever and jaundiced at age eight, and I wanted to explain it to you what I learned about both of these health issues here.

Yellow fever is a highly infectious viral fever with symptoms such as black vomit and fever. It is also known as yellow plague and black vomit. The major symptoms of jaundice is yellowing of the skin. In most severe cases of yellow fever one could have hemorrhaging that leads to death. The virus responsible for yellow fever is Flavivirus which is carried through infected mosquitoes.

Symptoms of yellow fever start with high fever and chills leading to headaches, nausea, and backaches. In severe cases the kidneys, liver, and gastrointestinal tract are affected, leading to internal bleeding and the black-colored vomit. Complications usually start as mild and progress rapidly. Jaundice is a side effect of the yellow fever affecting the liver and it shows up with yellow skin and eyes. Other complications of yellow fever include the kidneys developing proteinuria, delirium, depression, low blood pressure, strokes, coma, and even death.

Yellow fever is most commonly found in the areas where there are jungles and an abundance of vegetation. Prevention methods should include vaccination, insecticides, screening of the windows and doors for the houses, clearing stagnant waters, wearing protective clothing such as long sleeved shirts, pants and socks, and quarantining the person that is affected by yellow fever. A strict carbohydrate diet needs to be followed that includes soups, rice, liquids, and juices. A non- vegetarian diet, and foods that have spices, oils and sugars need to be avoided completely.

As there is no particular treatment plan for yellow fever, care should be taken in order to prevent infection, spread, and complications arising from the fever for people living in and around the jungle areas of the world and people who travel for expedition or other recreational journeys into the jungles in order to have safe and happy experiences because, OUR LIFE MATTERS.
