After breast cancer surgery, it is not unusual for many women to experience some odd and unpleasant sensations. Numbness and tingling are not unusual for many breast cancer patients, and rather to be expected. Dr. Anne Katz compares some of these sensations to a feeling you may have had after getting anesthetic during a visit to the dentist.
Some women may also feel sensations after breast cancer surgery that are similar to electric shock. For many breast cancer patients, their skin is so incredibly sensitive that the slightest touch can be uncomfortable or even painful. Many breast cancer patients find that the healing needed to overcome this particular problem can be a very long ongoing process.
Dr. Anne Katz says, "My professional life is focused on providing information, education and counseling to people with cancer and their partners about sexual changes that can occur during and after treatment. But there is another important aspect to this work; I want every cancer patient to be able to have a discussion about sexuality with their health care providers."
