Dr. Jaime Shamonki is a pathologist whose expertise is in breast surgical pathology. A pathologist is a doctor for other doctors.
Other doctors will bring a biopsy, or an excised lesion to the pathologist and within a few days, the pathologist will return to them with a pathology report. The pathologist is the one who gives the diagnosis.
After a biopsy for breast cancer, the pathologist will come up with a great deal of information concerning treatment.
Dr. Shamonki says, "I am a general Anatomic and Clinical Pathologist at Saint John’s Health Center, with an expertise in diseases of the breast. Surgical pathology, or the gross and microscopic evaluation of surgical specimens, constitutes the most significant portion of my work, however our practice also involves oversight of the clinical laboratory, including the individual departments of microbiology, blood bank, clinical chemistry and hematology. Due to the nature of our practice and interest in basic science, many pathologists are also involved in translational research."
