Dr. Keith Block aims to treat the whole person, not just their cancer diagnosis. He and his wife and partner Penny, merge traditional and complementary medicine.

Dr. Block is no stranger to sickness. He was plagued in his early years of medicine with ulcers and migraines. Being a patient permanently transformed his perspective as a healer.

Dr. Block recommends a diet heavy on plant foods for cancer patients, adding meat as they feel the need.

Dr. Block:

Cancer patients should really be eating a diet of plant foods with a little bit of animal here and there if they feel like they need it. Whole cereal grains, and when I talk about whole cereal grains I am talking about brown rice, barley, oats, millet, quinoa, teff, really the whole grain.

I am not really talking about even broken flours and if they are broken and you want to eat some bread it should be whole grain bread and not really bleached flour or some whole, some, some bleached flour that had a little bit of whole grain added along to add some color to it. That should be staple, a staple.

Vegetables, a wide selection, wide variety of colors that are rich in different fido chemicals. It’s really these fido chemicals in vegetables that provide a lot of the antioxidant capacity that’s really going to quiet down some of the fuel that can make a cancer not only grow but make it more aggressive.

A wide variety of fruits and particularly berries, berries happen to have a lot of the antioxidant properties that are really useful forcancer patients to consume. As far as proteins go, mostly plant-based proteins: legumes, lentils, chic peas, black beans, soy products like tofu and tempeh, seeds and nuts.

But also if people are really driven to consume animal products, I would say coldwater fish is a good idea and eggs could be all right, particularly egg whites. Or if you are going to eat whole eggs, be sure they are omega-3 eggs, what some people now are calling marine eggs. They are not from the fish. They are actually just rich in omega-3s because they’ve been fed omega-3 fats.
