Levon Helm, the Grammy-winning singer and drummer of the rock group The Band, died April 19, 2012 at age 71 after a long battle with throat cancer.

Although his cancer had reduced his trademark voice to a whisper, he was recently named by Rolling Stone magazine as one of the Top 100 Greatest Singers of all time.
