The "sugar pills" contain no active ingredients, and their only purpose are as a "place holder" to remind you to take your pills every day (so you know when to start your next pack).

You have your "period" or menstrual bleeding during the time of the 7 inactive pills because of the lack of hormones in your body; it is actually "withdrawal bleeding" that occurs (withdrawal from the active ingredients in the 21 previous pills).

Missing a "few pills" without doubling-up can increase your risk for pregnancy; may I ask why you did not double-up on pills after you missed a few (and/or used alternative form of birth control, like a condom?). If you are confused on how to double-up on pills after missing pills, I can help--just let me know!

Most women do not have periods when they are pregnant; bleeding during pregnancy is usually a sign of a pregnancy that is not viable, and any bleeding during pregnancy may be a sign of miscarriage, and should be immediately reported to your doctor. Spotting may occur during pregnancy (again, women would want to notify their doctor), but this would be different than a "period".

If you do not have a period this month, you can take a home pregnancy test, as they are about 99% effective at detecting the "pregnancy hormones" once a period is missed.
