There are no guarantees when taking emergency contraception that it will be effective at preventing a pregnancy, even when using it correctly. EC has the highest success rate when the following things happen:
1. EC is taken immediately, or as soon as possible, after unprotected intercourse
2. EC is taken as directed
It depends how long after your unprotected intercourse (or birth control failure) that you took the first dose of EC. EC provides some extra protection against pregnancy (up to about 80%), and if you take the first or second dose late, it just decreases the "80%" effectiveness rate. The first dose is probably most important, if that helps?
