Your glucose levels can change drastically, depending on so many factors (as I'm sure you know!). Your choice and combination of food, drink and exercise can alter your levels, and drinking wine is no different.

There is no amount or type of wine you can drink that won't alter your glucose levels. Everything you eat, drink and every time you exercise... you alter your glucose levels. If you want to drink wine and maintain a healthy range for your glucose level....read on!

In order to drink wine safely while diabetic, you can read this great article at the American Diabetes Association (ADA): What can I eat: Alcohol. The primary points provided include:
1. Women should drink 1 or fewer alcoholic beverages a day (5 oz glass of wine per day or less).
2. If you choose to drink alcohol, limit the amount and have it with food. Talk with your health care team about whether alcohol is safe for you.
3. Drink only when and if blood glucose is under control. Do not omit food from your regular meal plan.
4. Alcohol can cause hypoglycemia shortly after drinking and for 8-12 hours after drinking. So, if you want to drink alcohol, check your blood glucose before you drink and eat either before or while you drink. You should also check your blood glucose before you go to bed to make sure it is at a safe level.
