Your doctor is correct, losing weigh (which can be difficult) has been shown to help with diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Even a weight loss of 5% of total body weight has been shown to help with the imbalance of hormones and also with infertility.
I lost 80lb, so I know that it is not easy, but it is possible. My weight gain was the result of brain edema( because of a brain tumor and prescribed Decadron). I can share with you what worked for me.
First off, burn more calories than you consume. I ate 3 balance meals, no snacking. Some recommend 6 small meals with snacks throughout the day instead of 3 large meals. Drink plenty of water, no soda and no eating after 7:00 pm.
For exercise, (which was difficult when I weighted 200 lbs.) I walked, did housework and gradually resumed gardening. Do whatever exercise works for you.

It will take time, but you can do it!
