Most ovarian cysts can be removed in a surgery called a cystectomy. Ovaries are very resilient, they can be cut into pieces, cyst removed, the normal ovarian tissue sutured back together, and continue to work very well.

There are a few comments about dermoid cysts. They are common benign cysts, called primordial cysts, that usually contain hair, teeth and fat. Unlike physiologic (also called functional) cysts, dermoid cysts do not wax and wane, they have a tendency to grow and may become fairly large. If they cause bothersome symptoms, like pelvic fullness and pressure, they can be removed without removing the ovary. If you would like more information about ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, and other reasons hysterectomy is often recommended, but not needed, read the new book, THE H WORD, available on Amazon, and watch the video, "Female Anatomy: the Functions of the Female Organs", at hersfoundation.org/anatomy
