Chronic Cough

For the past 15 or so years I have had a dry hacking cough which becomes loose after about 10 minutes. It starts with an irritation in my throat. Sometimes I cough up mucus but not all the time. Then I am clearing my throat for another 15 minutes. This can happen a couple of times in one hour for the entire day. I do cough less at night I have been to every specialist there is...had all the medicines, x-rays, scans that they can conjure up. All results come back negative. I can only sit upright in a chair. If I recline I WILL start to cough. I have to sleep flat on my back and then pray that I don't have an attack. I cough so hard that my back and stomach muscles hurt. . I am going for an endoscopy and am hoping that something shows up other than acid reflux which I have mildly and am taking medicine. If I stand up and walk it relieves the cough and sometimes it goes away however, when I am in the office trying to work I cannot do that. My husband now sleeps in another room as I disturb him too much at night. My poor co-workers must be sick and tired of me. I have spent hundreds of dollars on alternative medications but nothing seems to help. I have had Chinese herbal remedies…nothing. There are certain foods that I dare not eat such as nuts, raw carrots, coconut and anything very sweet. It is getting worse as I get older and being 67, I dread to think what I will be like at 70. I am DESPARATE for an answer to this devastating and debilitating problem.

Hello Anon

You may have a lung condition like bronchitis - it's important that you seek medical help. You may be prescribed an inhaler that can help greatly.

Sometimes people have something called post nasal drip..when nasal fluid or mucous goes to your throat sometimes it causes a person to cough constantly. Perhaps an ears nose and throat doctor could help. Good luck

Hi, Anon.

Thank you for sharing your story.

I'm sorry you are going through this. Hopefully, the endoscopy will give you some answers. Acid reflux can cause this kind of a cough. I know you say you have a mild case. Perhaps that, combined with something else (allergies or excessive saliva) is a contributing factor. Good luck with your test. Keep us updated.

I have the exact same symptoms with the exact same medical non diagnosis but I do not have acid reflux and with all of modern medicine I just find it really disturbing that no one knows what causes this. Please let me know if you get some positive answers
