Constant Brown Spotting

I have had brown spotting for about 5 years now, but I have a normal period every month. For about a week after my period I have no spotting, but after that I have constant brown spotting until my next period. I have told my doctor about this and he doesn't really even acknowledge it. I was going to the health clinic when I first started experiencing this and they would keep changing my birth control pills to see if it helped and it didn't. I have gone off the pill for years and that didn't help either. Also just thought that I would mention that I get a lot of headaches, I am tired a lot and I have a lowe sex drive in case it could be connected.

I'd say if a hormone was low, it was probably progesterone. But....just a guess, and even if she has a hormonal imbalance. Seems like GYNs are taking that vague approach without actually doing their job lately. If they tell a woman that, doesn't the woman deserve to know the results? Come on docs, spend more time with patients and schedule them at thirty minute intervals....not fifteen. We are human beings trusting our lives in your hands. So ya pretty much owe it to us....doesn't require rocket science. Sorry everyone...I've had a nightmare past few days with, well....what I said above.

Sorry for the delay, Diane....dealing with a lot and been busier than I can handle. I'm also a chronic pain patient. Anyway, I reside in a suburb just north of Dallas (within the DFW metroplex area), which is in Collin county. I appreciate you taking the interest in my situation and look forward to your response.

Warm regards,
Jordan

Wow, I thought I was the only who is having this problem. I've been having brown spotting for almost 8 years now. It started when I was in high school. I often got frustrated and now I am at the point where I am just too tired of worrying it. My husband often gets annoyed by this but fortunately, he can be considered understanding for this matter. I have visited more than 8 doctors and Gyns completed with ultrasound check, blood test, etc in most visits. None of them gave me clear answers. Most of them said I had imbalance hormone and prescribed me with birth control pills. The last Gyn that I visited spotted that I might suffer from polycystic ovaries syndrome (from the ultrasound and blood test). But based on our conversation, it seemed that I should not be too worried about it. He also said that whenever I am ready to have a baby I could take some kind of hormonal medicine to help with the conceive process. I hope this can be useful but am still looking forward for a good news to stop this annoying brown spotting. Thank you all.

Anon,

I'm so sympathetic with you. Eight doctors/gynecologists and all those tests and still no clear answers? No wonder you're frustrated and ready to just stop dealing with it.

When most of the doctors told you that you have a hormone imbalance, did they seem to agree on what kind of imbalance? Can you tell us what you were low in or high in that they believe is causing this?

Even though I am sorry to hear all of you are having the same issue with brown discharge as I am, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one. It is really embarrassing and after 4 years of it....very annoying. I too had the same unhelpful response from doctors. They just kept assuming it was "old blood at the end of periods, which was normal". It is NOT normal, because prior to four yrs ago, I didn't go through this. I have my normal five day cycles and then another four to six days of this brown discharge that smells bad. I have a thing against an odor which comes from there, as I'm sure all of you do too.
After doing some research, and putting two and two together, I came to the conclusion this is a build-up of material/tissue, etc. in the uterus. The sure way to stop the brown discharge entirely (and once and for all) is by having a D and C performed, where a GYN will go in and scrape the lining of the uterine walls. This is an outpatient procedure and the patient only needs a few days of rest/taking it easy, no sex, douching or tampon use for approximately four weeks; give or take.
I found there can be several causes for this material accumulation in the uterus, including past abortion procedures, hormone imbalance, uterine cysts/fibroids and past miscarriage. I then realized the cause of my "problem": About four years ago, I had a very early-term miscarriage, not even knowing I was pregnant. It wasn't the first time I had one in the past, as I am now 39 years of age. The first miscarriage I had, before I got pregnant with my daughter (back when I was in my early to mid-twenties), I didn't have any unusual discharge/symptoms afterward. Therefore, when I had the one four years ago, I didn't anticipate needing physician care.
I found this post this morning, when searching for alternatives to having a D and C, to find if there was something else I could do to cleanse my uterus, thus expelling all foreign material which is obviously causing the brown discharge. I hope my info here helped some, if not all of you. Best of luck and please post a reply on here if you come across a safe alternative to D and C's (they are reasonably safe as well...just expensive without insurance).

Jordan,
Thank you for the information! You are right, in some cases when the woman has a known miscarriage, she will need to be treated by a procedure (such as the D&C), to ensure all of the tissue has been removed. Brown spottiing can be normal for women, but if it is consistent, painful or has any odor...this needs to be medically evaluated.

I hope women will know that anytime discharge has an odor, regardless of color, it does need to be medically evaluated.

Jordan, you mentioned that you've done a lot of research, and I'm wondering if you have seen your GYN about your symptoms?

Hi Alison,

Yep, I've seen a GYN about my condition, however, since I do not have health insurance (and cannot afford to pay out-of-pocket medical expenses), I'm out of luck. This condition is causing other symptoms which is making it difficult to function on a regular basis physically. My soon to be ex, which was cause of "half" of the problem in the first place, refuses to take responsibility financially or emotionally. Thus being one of the many reasons (after a 6+ yr relationship) we will be ending this relationship. He refuses to wear condoms, refuses to have a vasectomy so I have lost all desire to be intimate with this particular man (not being so with anyone else either, until my body is in better condition).

If you have any suggestions, besides county services in general, who would perform this procedure at no cost to me (in TX), I'm all ears! :) I appreciate your feedback and consideration.

Warm regards,
Jordan
