Donating Hair: Locks of Love vs. Pantene Pro-V Beautiful Lengths

For so long I have been frustrated with the inability to grow my hair out. About 6 months ago I came across Pantene Pro-V's new product, Beautiful Lengths lengthening shampoo and conditioner. I figured it probably would not work but I have liked their products in the past so I bought it anyway. About 4 months after using the shampoo and conditioner my hair began to grow like a weed! Now, 6 months later my hair is 2 feet and some odd inches long.

I would love to donate my hair soon, but I am having trouble deciding between the Locks of Love and Pantene's Beautiful Length's program. I was wondering if anyone can give me some insight or advice on which to choose and why.

Does Beautiful lengths donate wigs to children too or just to women?

Several years ago, I drove down to Florida to the Locks of Love office. I had two trash bags full of hair that people had donated but the beautician could not afford to mail. Anyway, they gave me a short tour of their facility. They were receiving huge amounts of hair every day and throwing most of it in the trash. The reason was that it was not correctly packaged and could not be used.
The Locks of Love people said that people needed to be more careful about packaging the hair that they donated, but I think they could do more to educate people about the process.

I dontated to locks of Love twice. One was 18 inches and then a couple years later I did ten inches. The place I went to was doing a free haircut for donations, but decided they were not making enough money from return visits and they quit doing it. So I am going with Pantene this time around.

If you are collecting hair for cancer patients please make sure you go online and read all the regulations for hair. It's very very important that it's long enought, cry, tied together ect....

Also, (the above post is mine and to add to it) Pantene ProV accepts hair and then makes the wigs and then DONATES them to American Cancer Society. Pantene is NOT making any money off the hair. Where as Locks of Love does.

Hello all, I am actually getting ready to cut my hair to donate. I had a hard time thinking about who to donate to. I read about both LOL and BL, and both are very good organiztions to choose from. LOL takes min of 10 inches to use towards wings and BL takes min of 8 inches. I read that BL take min length for adult wigs, because they are more typical for shorter hair styles. So for all of you who are torn between the two, ask yourself who do you want to help? Adults or Children? As far as myself, I'm only going to be able to donate 9inches, so I'm going for BL. Either way, what we are doing is great.

Hi Alison,

I'm also planning to donate my hair and I'm curious as to what organization did you donate your hair after reading the opinions of others?

i work at a hair salon and have asked around and researched a lot. Over the years i have come to the conclusion that i would def. donate to Beautiful lengths over locks of love any day. Beautiful lengths by Pantene makes the wigs and DONATES to cancer children. Locks of love is just a catchy name so everyone just knows about it. What they don't realize is that locks of love actually is making money off of your hair! They make wigs and they actually SELL them! Not just to children with cancer but anyone who just wants a wig for fun. Or for weaves. This is why i would recommend donating to Beautiful lengths any day!

I am also a hairdresser and to correct you, pantene does NOT make wigs for children. They are donated to women only who have cancer only...not other hair loss situations which are just as detrimental. They are a "for profit" organization donating hair to a non for profit (cancer society) Their" for profit "org. offsets the costs to make the wigs unlike LOL. They aren't making money from the hair donated....that would be a for profit co. like pantene....do your research please before you post. The unusable hair from LOL is sold for oil spills..farmers etc. to offset costs of making the prosthesis. Smart, I think. 98% of LOL recipients receive a free prosthesis...see, you don't even know LOL doesn't make "wigs" so to say...check out ingredients in Pantene products..hmmmmmm....scary.
