Heart attack?

Hi, I am a 20 year old female. I had a pounding sensation in my chest and a feeling that I have to take deeper breaths every time I inhale. My left arm feels funny too. This is the first time I've experienced this and I'm really worried that this is a heart attack. I don't drink or smoke, and my blood pressure is normal. No family history but my dad has high blood pressure. Really worried now, is it likely that I'm having a heart attack?

Hi Anonymous,

Thank you for your question and welcome to Empowher. There are two things that concern me about your question is that you had a rapid heartbeat as well as left arm pain - these two things are concerning. You should always see your doctor immediately if these things occur.

Since you are 20 years old, this also may be a panic attack or anxiety which will also feel like a heart attack. You never want to take any of these symptoms lightly as you never know what they could be and will require medical attention. Are you stressed out, Anonymous? Is school, home, boyfriends driving you crazy? Is there anything else that you can think of that may have caused the onset of your rapid heartbeat?

Keep us posted, anonymous.
