How long should antibiotic-related intestinal side effects last once the medicine is done?

antibiotic-related intestinal side effects

Okay, I'll try to make this post as "non-TMI" as possible. I had my first-ever sinus infection a few weeks ago, and the PA at my doctor's office prescribed Omnicef for me for 10 days. It did a great job at knocking out the cooties and making me feel better, but it's also wreaked havoc on my intestinal system. About halfway into the 10 days I started getting diarrhea, sometimes as much as 8 times a day. Fun stuff, huh?

I figured the trots would improve when the Omnicef was done, but they kept going. About 5 days after finishing the Omnicef I asked the pharmacist how long I could expect the diarrhea side effects and she so obviously guessed when she said "oh I'm not sure, but I'd say about a week or so, I would think" Don't you love it when they make stuff up on the spot?

So now it's been 9 days since I've had my last Omnicef pill and I'm still having mild symptoms. Not "oh man, get me to the bathroom NOW" symptoms, but things just aren't 100% yet. I've bought some strong acidophilus and am taking it 3 times a day and am trying to eat more good-quality plain yogurt. TMI alert--there is just a lot of mucousy reddish brown stuff coming out and it's creeping me out. I read that Omnicef can cause reddish poos due to the way it interacts with iron in your diet, but would this still be the cause a week-plus after finishing the dose?

Does anyone know how long antibiotics essentially stay in your system, and how long I have to put up with this? It's getting better overall but it seems like this might be a medicine I want to avoid in the future. At what point do I call the doctor for a follow-up? thanks to everyone and I hope I didn't gross anyone out too badly.

Clindamycin should be banned. I was perfectly well 1 week ago and even though I requested Penicillin for an infected tooth, my new dentist gave me 300mg of this 3 times per day. All hell broke loose. Have never felt so sick. Nausea in waves, severe cramping in the stomach and abdomen, tremors in the hands, off-balance, increased heart rate and thumping palpitations which felt as if my heart was turning over in my chest. Over 5 days that symptom increases from occasionally to once every 8 seconds missed heart beat. Liver function testing done at the hospital E.R. showed (for the first time in my life) abnormal readings. The nurse thought I may be having a stroke/heart attack as I was also having central chest pain. A week later, 3 days after stopping this idiot drug, I am still having cramping, heart thumps and palpitations, nausea, especially on lying down, fatigue, and a fear it may have in fact given me Clostridium Deficiele, a life-threatening condition! I read this all for myself on reliable medical sits online. Nothing sensational about those reports, just fact! I am trying to hold out tonight to see a GP tomorrow who may actually DO something about whatever this medication has caused. Hopefully there is something that will kill these effects. My stomach feels as if a hole has been eaten in it. I wouldn't let ANYONE give me this drug again.

I took clindamycin for 2 days and I've had to stop taking them. They have made me more ill than I was and have all the side effects you have listed above. I've bought a really good probiotic but I'm still in agony. Really should be banned!

I was just horrified to read all the comments here about reactions to antibiotics.. I looked this up because my mom was having some nausea after taking some antibiotics and had to go into the ER with some of the same symptoms that some of the people here had... It was terrifying, because she had an allergic reaction to the anti-nausea drug phenogren.. BEWARE !!!! I think the thing that helped her the most was the IV, because it cleared some of the antibiotics out of her system.. That and a good quality probiotic seemed to help, and the ginger cookies are good also...! But if you're still feeling bad after 4 or 5 days , go back to the Dr and ask for an IV to clear the antibiotics out...

i was on doxycycline (200mg) pr day for almost three years for Rocacea. This past year they had me down to one 100mg pill each day. I recently stopped because I started having a lot of abdominal symptoms and just feeling yucky for over a month. I've been off of them for a week now and feel better, but still yucky. i'm having a colonoscopy done this week to see if there is any colitis. I've been taking probiotics to try and get healthy, but it's slow going. When I start feeling better, I end up eating stuff that really works my intestines, then it's back to feeling yucky. I still feel better than with the antibiotics. How long does it take to heal up or will I need other medication to get things back to normal?

Could you provide us an update? Your symptoms sound exactly like mine, just that I am going on a month now of not being able to eat much at all, and the doctors in town can't figure out what to do. Would love to hear how you finally recovered from this!

I was recently on the antibiotic cleocin (the name brand form of Clindamycin) I had to stop taking it do to extreme pain in my abdomen right where my sternum ends. It hurts when I breath and swallow food. I was hoping someone could let me know how long it should take for this symptom to pass and (if possible) make it go away faster.

I'm having the same issue. How long did it take for your symptom to go away?
