Q:

how to tell if it's an iron deficiency?

I read an article online yesterday about symptoms of iron deficiency, and I recognized many of them. I've been feeling run down the last few weeks due to working a lot, and my hair is shedding more than usual. it is also breaking. My nails are also very weak and peel and break easily and I find myself desiring a nap in the afternoon around 3 nearly every day. i also sleep for an average of 8-9 hours and when I wake up I still feel tired.
Is it a coincidence? I was looking up foods rich in iron and admittedly they are mostly things that I hardly eat as they are very expensive (imported as my country doesn't produce most of them) or hard to find. I was wondering if I should take an iron supplement to help, but I wonder if that could possibly affect my birth control (Gynera brand) and its efficiency? My GP doesn't believe much in taking supplements, he normally says I should try harder to have a balanced diet... is it true that supplements and multi-vitamins could affect how my body absorbs birth control pills and therefore its efficiency?

thank you
