Plan B can definitely cause periods to start early, be delayed or otherwise irregular. It may take another cycle for your periods to be back on-track.

It is very rare for condoms to break, and I'm wondering if you are using them correctly? It is important to put the condom on by rolling it onto penis (no fingernails), leaving some room at the tip for semen. Using lubrication is also important, and there are some great brands with different flavors and scents you can try.

Heavy bleeding is not a sign of pregnancy, but rather, it is the absence of bleeding that is a possible sign of pregnancy.

I am assuming your girlfriend consenting to taking the emergency contraception? When woman use "EC", it can cause irregular bleeding between periods (the "EC" is a mega-dose of hormones...found in regular birth control pills). It is the mega-dose of hormones that can cause the irregular or heavy bleeding.

If her heavy bleeding is considered "abnormal heavy bleeding", then she may want to call her doctor. Abnormal heavy bleeding would be described as:
- needing to change tampons or sanitary pads every 1-2 hours
- period lasts longer than 7 days
- Produces a total blood loss of about 5 1/2 tablespoons or more
- Interferes with her life (see link below for more detail)
- Causes tiredness, fatigue or shortness of breath (symptoms of anemia)

You can read more about abnormal or normal periods at: How to Know if Your Period is Normal

Does this help?

One more thought:

If you both want to "double-up" on your protection (condoms are very effective at preventing pregnancy when used consistently and correctly, and I wanted to commend you on using one!!), have you both talked about the use of hormonal contraception? Your girlfriend has many options available, if she is interested, all of which are more effective at pregnancy prevention than emergency contraception.

Hey everyone, I have a few questions...
First is I ended my period Sept 12, had protected sex Sept 14, but the 15th I went ahead and took a Plan B pill just in case. A few days later I had what was maybe a light period - it was heavier than spotting, but not my normal flow & lasted only 3 days. That ended the 22nd. Now this may be stupid, but still I feel better asking, the chances of me getting pregnant by using condoms & the B plan pill are slim to none right?

Also, I have health insurance through my mother, who is a very by the book women and is all for me waiting to have sex until I'm married, I was too but that kinda changed... I want to get on birth control but asking her is not exactly an option and I was wondering if anyone had any ideas or suggestions to go about getting BC
Thanks!

Hi, Anon, and thank you for your question!

Yes, there is a slim-to-non chance of getting pregnant if you use condoms and Plan B as you did. However, you don't want to use Plan B everytime you turn around, because it affects your hormones and, as you saw, your body's cycles. Side effects tend to increase if you use it quite often.

You didn't mention how old you are or where you're located. You can always go to Planned Parenthood to learn about birth control options for you. They also tend to cost less than a regular doctor, which is important if you're paying for the services yourself, without insurance. Here is their home page, where you can put in your zip code and find a health center near you:

http://www.plannedparenthood.org/index.htm

Does that help? Do you need information about different kinds of birth control?

If we can help any further, please write back. If there's not a Planned Parenthood health center in your area, just let us know what city and state you live in and we can help you find somewhere to go.

I had unprotected sex on Friday (Sept. 4) but we did it when I was on my period which started the night before (Sept. 3). We thought about getting the Plan B right away, but didn't get the chance til Monday, 72 hours after. I was still on my period when I took Plan B. My period stopped on the 8th/9th but then I got some bleeding a day after. And on the 14th had some really heavy bleeding to the point that I had to wear a pad, like I was on my period. I forgot how long it lasted but i think light to heavy flow stopped on the 18th. Now, my cycle is about 31-33 days...and a month and 4 days have passed and still no period.... can someone help me with why its late? Is it because of the bleeding between periods and due to Plan B? And does it really make it come late? I am so worried. I've been searching stuff online all day..
