Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole (Flagyl)

I have had so many side effects from ciprofloxacin and metronidazole (Flagyl), I went to the ER. CT scan confirmed diagnosis, but they ignored my thoughts that the meds were making me sicker and told me to coninue them for the full 10 days, despite debilitating nausea, cramps, and diarrhea worse than I had at the beginning. Online, I see the meds can be RX'd for 7-10 days. Am I OK to stop them now? What is the experience of others with this diagnosis?

Just went through the same thing. 4 days later I still am lightheaded, dizzy and lethargic. Went to a walk in clinic to follow up since the gastro dr. can't see me for 5 weeks !! (oh unless I am in pain...) and primary is unavailable for 2 weeks. Walk in dr. confirmed side effects will take a little time to quit. I need to hydrate more. I'm 61, never been this sick from AB's in my life! He told me if I experience ANY pain he wants me to go to the ER!! That in itself is causing me a lot of anxiety. I feel for you!

Eliza,

I am so sorry that you are having side effects from your medications. Lots of times antibiotics just make us feel worse than we were to begin with. Since you are taking Cipro AND flagyl, the side effects are almost inevitable. Cipro has a contraindication of watery or bloody diarrhea, but one of the common side effects of Flagyl is diarrhea-- so doctor's would most likely attribute your diarrhea to Flagyl since you have been checked at the ER due to your side effects. What I can say is that if you have bloody diarrhea you should definitely contact your doctor immediately.

As far as finishing the whole 10 days-- normally, when you are given an antibiotic, you MUST finish the entire prescription to ensure that it is effective, even if you are feeling better and are symptom free. Nausea, cramping, and Diarrhea are unfortunate side effects of both; especially common with Flagyl. I would say that you have already endured 8 days of antibiotics, another 2 days don't compare to having to start you off on antibiotics again because you didn't finish this round, know what I mean?

Make sure you take your pills with PLENTY of water, and continue to drink water throughout the day. If it helps, have a snack with your meds as well.

Please keep us posted. We hope you feel better soon!
