Q:

If a person is missing her period due to weight loss for an extended period of time how long does it take before it becomes dangerous to reproductive organs? Can the period be provoked in any way?

Dear Anon,

A missed period for more than one month is known an Amenorrhea.

Complications of Amenorrhea include:

  • Infertility. If you don't ovulate and have menstrual periods, you can't become pregnant.
  • Osteoporosis. If your amenorrhea is caused by low estrogen levels, you may also be at risk of osteoporosis — a weakening of your bones.

In order to regulate your periods, the eating disorder must be addressed and treated. Please contact the national eating disorder hotline at: 1-800.931.2237

Best,

Rosa
