if a woman undergone total thyroidectomy, shall she take thyroid hormones?

i undergone thyroidectomy last week and the doctor told me that it will be total thyroidectomy..but some doctors told me that even you have gone total thyroidectomy you still have little part of thyroid left for your hormones. is it true?

Dear Anon, 

Thank you for posting! If you are undergoing a total thyroidectomy, this means that the entire thyroid is to be removed. This doesn't leave any of the thyroid left to produce hormones and therefore you would need to take a replacement hormone.
