I've never been to a doctors office for a checkup. Now that I am on my own with my own insurance I feel like I should take advantage of this. I'm not sick (that I know of), am active and eat well. But I want to make sure everything is ok. What types of tests should I ask for? Who do I go see a family doctor or general?

Hello Anonymous,
Schedule an appointment with an internist for a general physical examination. The physician will begin by taking a medical history. A physical exam will follow. Your height, weight, blood pressure and pulse will be checked. The physician will examine you, listen to your lungs and your heart. Blood test will be done to check your blood count, glucose and cholesterol levels.
If you are female, you should schedule an appointment with a gynecologist.
