Hi, I have a question to ask which is I have a doctor who is an oncologist and I'm suppose to see a hematology oncology and it's been hard for me to find someone. I've been thinking my doctor who is an oncologist do you think it's okay and if it makes sense that I ask him if by any chance he knows a good hematology oncology? I been thinking my doctor as oncologist might know someone in his field. Please let me know about this soon.
Thank You,
Melissa

Hello Melissa,

First, check and see if your oncologist is a hematologist-oncologist. Are there other oncologists in his practice?

A hematologist-oncologist is a physician who specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and/or prevention of blood diseases and cancers such as iron-deficiency anemia, hemophilia, sickle-cell disease, leukemia and lymphoma. This physician is trained in hematology — the study of blood — and oncology — the study of cancer.

Hematologist-oncologists do not usually treat operable cancers such as prostate cancer, but specialize in treating blood cancers, such as Hodgkins and non-Hodgkins lymphomas, leukemias and multiple myelomas. A hematologist-oncologist may also specialize in the management of solid tumors.

Although many hematology-oncology graduates end up solely focusing on oncology, the two specialties intersect in the understanding of leukemias, lymphomas and solid tumors.

I hope this information is helpful.

Maryann

Thanks for your reply. My oncologist is only a oncologist/General Surgeon. In their office building I saw hematologists oncologist. Do you think it's still okay and reasonable to ask him if by any chance he knows a good hematologist oncologist? Please let me know soon.
Thanks,
Melissa
