Q:

Is it possible?

My period is about 4 or 5 days late, and I'm really freaking out that I might be pregnant. The last time I had (unprotected) sex, my boyfriend had gotten some pre-ejaculate near my vulva. We cleaned it off, but I remember having a mini panic attack a few minutes later because I got these weird cramps. I don't even really get cramps when I'm on my period, so it freaked me out that I was cramping after we had unprotected sex.

Now, a few weeks later, my period hasn't happend yet. My cycle is pretty regular at about 26-27 days, so I was expecting it on Sunday or Monday. Its now almost Friday and I haven't even seen a spot!

I was worried that I could be pregnant, so I took a test on Wednesday and it came out negative. I also don't feel any physical symptoms. On top of that, I'm overweight (5'7 and about 300 pounds), I smoke, I drink moderately, and my schedule has changed drastically due to me losing my job. I did have a little break-out like I normally do around my period, and I have been having very slight cramps.

Please tell me that I'm just overreacting and my period is only late due to stress! The last thing I need is a baby!

Hi, Anon,

Thanks for your question, and welcome!

From what you say, I would guess that yes, you're just late.

The unexpected cramps you felt would not have been related to a possible pregnancy, because at that point any sperm that entered your vagina would just be starting on its journey toward an egg. Cramping with a pregnancy doesn't always occur, and if it does, it tends to happen days later, when an embryo has implanted itself in the wall of the uterus.

While it would be REMOTELY possible for you to have gotten pregnant in the scenario you describe, it is extremely unlikely. Plus, the pregnancy test was negative. However, you have been under a huge amount of change and stress lately, and that on its own is enough to mess up our hormones. When we are under more stress than normal, we can go early or late, or even skip a period. (Of course, that in itself causes more stress!)

My advice would be to tell you to not worry so much about it for another few days. Sometimes we ovulate later in the month than we think we do, which can easily make our period a week or 10 days late. Wait another few days, and if it doesn't come you can take another pregnancy test. I'll keep my fingers crossed that you won't need to.
