Q:

Late Second Period After Taking Next Choice? Pregnancy?

Can Next Choice mess up your cycle? My period began on March 31. I had sex with a condom on April 9th, and just in case, I took Next Choice on April 11th (2 days after sex). I experienced some moderate bleeding on April 17-April 21, then I got what I thought was my normal period on April 28th (it lasted for 6 days). I am now three days late for my period and have some small cramps and bloating, but have not gotten it yet. I have had a negative blood pregnancy test and multiple negative HPTs. The blood pregnancy test was taken 6 weeks after possible conception, and the last negative HPT was this morning.

Is there a chance that I could be still be pregnant and not be testing positive for pregnancy? Or is it just the Next Choice? Can I trust the negative pregnancy tests at this point, or should I be concerned the delay to my period? How often do women get period-like bleeding throughout their pregnancy AND never test positive.

I really appreciate your thorough answer, as I am worried about this.

Ok, so I took next choice, last month, March. Like 10hrs after sex. I got my period a day early and it was longer than usual. It is now April and I usually get my period on the 7th of the month, it is now the 11th. No period. I've been feeling bloated a lot, and have had minor discharge. I have a son already, so I know what it feels like to be pregnant, so I feel like I'm stressing too much. Still, can't stop. :/

Sorry. One more question. Are blood pregnancy tests generally accurate? If I had one 6 weeks after sex, and it was negative, is it 100% safe to say I am not pregnant? I'm just worried because of my delayed period.

Pregnancy tests are about 99% accurate (I'm not sure if any test is 100%), but a pregnancy test (urine or blood) after 2 weeks is 99% accurate. If you waited 6 weeks, then yes, you can depend on the results you received. The test would have shown positive for any "pregnancy hormones".

Your period is "only" delayed by 3 days, and I just wanted to give you some perspective: some women can miss an entire period for a month, and not have anything "wrong", or be pregnant...sometimes women's cycles can just change due to environmental circumstances (illness, medication, stress, etc). Your most likely reason for a delayed period is from taking emergency contraception; it is very, very common for your cycle to be "off" after taking EC.

Wait a few more weeks, and your period should begin (I bet it will begin this week, but give yourself 14 days before thinking about it...it will help lessen your stress, promise!)

I still haven't gotten my period yet, and I have had nausea for the last day or so, and my breasts have been just a little tender. Also, i seem to have a line running from my belly button down. Am I just going crazy with worrying? I went to the doctor today for a yeast infection, and she did a urine test and it was negative. I just cannot get this out of my head.

Yes, emergency contraception can cause an irregular menstrual period, usually by leading to a late or early period (by about a week). Please read the instructions that came with your EC, as it details what side effects you can expect.

It sounds like you are having symptoms for an upcoming period, but since you already had a period after sex, plus had a negative HPT this morning, all of this indicates you are not pregnant.

Please let us know when your period begins!
