Q:

Next Choice?

My last regular cycle was Aug 2nd or 3rd, I'm always regular, 6-7 days. The condom broke the 14th which would be the day I suspect I would be ovulating. We hurried up and got Next Choice within an hour later, took both pills at the same time, I experienced dizziness, bad cramping, and was nauseous that same afternoon, about a half hour to an hour, then about a week (22nd) later I had bleeding from the pills that lasted three days and was light. The following month my cycle was late until the 19th, which lasted for two days and had thick clotting. I took about four HPT last month, all coming out negative and before the 19th, the last test I took the result window was very cloudy, and the blue was also very light and it took two minutes to show completely! This month, I'm late again! My lower stomach is hard, and heavy, I'm also nauseous, weak, and exhausted, with constant headaches, bloated, gassy, hard to sleep, and my feet/thighs/back are hurting. My breasts are also still sore, and my nipples get hard even when I'm burning up. Should I be concerned now? Can the pill still be affecting me after two months? Could my stomach be hard and feeling as if it's expanding because of the lack of menstrual cycles? What are my chances of still being pregnant, spermicide condom, and the pills together, on a day I was ovulating? I've read it's not FDA approved to take the pills at the same time, did that possibly cause the pills to be ineffective or not work as they should? Thank you!

Hi Anon,

Welcome back to EmpowHER, Keep in mind that ovulation usually can occur mid-cycle, but can vary from between Day 11 and Day 21 of a woman's cycle. Just because you had sex on the 14th does not mean you were ovulating that day. Also, Recent research indicates that both doses for the next choice pill can be taken at the same time up to 120 hours after unprotected sex. That's why probably your pharmacist suggested that you take them both together. However, your symptoms might be due to the Pills. Everyone's body is different and will react differently to medication. That's why it is very important for you to see a doctor and explain all your symptoms.

Best of luck,
Daisy

I understand how it should be taken, however the pharmacist instructed me to take them together. I was pretty iffy on it, but trusted her. However, since I didn't what are the chances that I am? What's the consequences, any known problems? There's not that much advice on the internet for women who've taken both at the same time. I've been trying not to really worry or stress over it, and I haven't much. Been eating a lot of fruits, and vegs, lots of water. So if I am, or not, I'm trying to be prepared. The bleeding the pills caused, is that technically my new "period". I've read that it's not a a period, but more so break through bleeding. I also spotted once today, and that's it. Technically for my regular period I'm two weeks late, and this is the 2nd month. So both months I've been two weeks late since the MAP. I heard the pills shouldn't affect my period after the first month? When should I start thinking it's something else besides the pills, next month if my cycle is not regular? Thank you Daisy!

Hi Anon,
Welcome to EmpowHER and thanks for your question. It's very important to take the Next Choice Pill as instructed. Next Choice Directions are as follow; the first tablet as soon as possible but not later than 72 hours (3 days) after unprotected sex.
Take the second tablet 12 hours after you took the first one.
In most instances, your next menstrual period will come at or within 1 week of its expected time. The different symptoms you are feeling can be due to the absence of a regular menstrual cycle or can be pregnancy. That's why it's important to talk to doctor and have him due blood work to determine if in deed you are pregnant.

Best of luck,
Daisy
