I had a flu shot Sept. 2008 and remember it hurt when given. Since then I have pain in my upper arm and shoulder (it's now been a year). I believe it is nerve damage from the needle going to deep. I have had an MRI. meds and now going to Chiro with no relief. I cant't put my arm behind my back or lift it over my head and forget about putting weight on it. Does anyone know of relief for this condition?

Thanks

I'm writing again to mention something i forgot i'm feeling.I am also having numbness up and down my arm and at times both my hands go numb.I wrote before that my arm pain is so bad at times it gives me mild headaches and now i also feel dizzy. It also seems i get like this nauseated feeling from the pain being so bad.Thank you to all of you who post and give your advice and helpful even temporay ideas that help the pain a bit.I've been crying off and on because the pain scares me and annoys me.It just feels like my arm is going to fall off.I've been praying and trying hard to stay calm.I'm just hoping it isn't nerve damage.I don't want to be paralyzed for the rest of my life.I'm 38 and have 3 kids.I have two young teens and a 9 year old,so they can help me.They just feel bad seeing me feel this way.I'm going to try to take some glucosamen vitamins and try that sports cream for aching muscles.I heard that taking Calcium,Magnesium,Potassium vitamins help somewhat.Anything is worth a try at this point.God Please Bless us all!

Hi Pat, I looked up the symptoms of Frozen Shoulder and am pretty sure that isn't what I have. I am going to wait until after the holidays and go back to my doctor again. I am not confident that there is anything he can do for me though. From what I have been reading, it is just wait it out. My husband gets very alarmed when I have the bouts of 'extreme' pain. The only way I can describe it is like my arm is being torn from my body - that is how painful it is! The worst of the pain passes in about 45 seconds and then continues to subside. This morning my pain is just in my upper arm - not too bad.

It is important that you write down all pertinent information and see a physician. There is mercury in flu shots. My family has suffered needlessly from mercury poisoning. Both my sister and I lost our daughters from mercury exsosure-severe heart and kidney problems. My sister has even had a heart attack due to mercury poisoning. The CDC came up three decades ago because of the high incidence demographically of congenital heart defects. They shut the water supply down. I am not trying to scare you but you must consider it especially if you have amalgam fillings.

Pat, I have pain around the clock, every day. It is mostly in my upper arm, but does go into my forearm quite often as well. I just have the excruciating pain when I jar my arm, turn it too quickly, or try to lift something 'slightly' heavy (even the pillow on my bed). I can't even recall each time it has happened. I very gently dress everyday and pulling on jeans is something I have to do with extra care. I will check out the frozen shoulder to see if there is something helpful. It is just such a coincidence this started within a day of H1N1 vaccine.

Hi Canadian - Frozen shoulder takes a while to develop, and comes after keeping the arm/shoulder immobile. If you've had these pains since getting the shot then it probably is not frozen shoulder. It sounds more like the type of muscle injury others have mentioned from the vaccine being administered improperly. You may want to contact the office where you received the shot. If several people had injections that were not administered properly they may be able to both confirm the cause and help you with treatment. I'm so sorry you're in so much pain, especially at this time of year. Pat

Canadian and Anon - I can't tell from your comments if you're saying you're feeling this pain only when you use your arm. If you stopped using your arm/shoulder because of the pain that came after the vaccination and now only use it on a limited basis and are experiencing severe additional pain in the shoulder area each time you now try to use it what you may be experiencing is a frozen shoulder. I've had one, and the pain is horrible. An orthopedic specialist would be able to diagnose and treat this. It can be a very long process and would likely include physical therapy to restore your range of motion.

Here's a couple of links about frozen shoulder that may help, and I'd like to also invite other members to chime in with suggestions and information that may help.
This is very troubling - another set of problems on top of the first set - and hopefully we can figure out some ways to help each other.

Thanks everyone, Pat

Yes, the pain is unbearable---tears and screaming. You can't put your arm into anything or bump it. Raising it over your head is a real kicker. I have forced myself to use it, ice it. It has been three months and the improvement is slow!

I'm back with further comments/questions. Dec. 21 was 8 weeks from my H1N1 vaccine shot. Night time sleep alludes me as I believe the activity during the day is good for the muscles in the arm and they must tighten up through the night. In the morning my arm is usually the most sore. There is a symptom I have not yet seen posted that I am having. That is if I move my arm in the wrong direction, at any given time and without warning, the pain is beyond anything I have ever experienced. I scream out in pain and tears involuntarily come to my eyes because it is that bad. This morning it happened again when I lifted some very lightweight clothing from the washer. One day I could understand, I slipped on the ice on the street and jarred my arm. This unbelievable pain has happened many times - has this been happening to any others?

Does the influenza vaccine contain thimerosal?
Yes, the majority of influenza vaccines distributed in the United States currently contain thimerosal as a preservative. However, some contain only trace amounts of thimerosal and are considered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be preservative-free. Manufacturers of preservative-free flu vaccine use thimerosal early in the manufacturing process. The thimerosal gets diluted as the vaccine goes through the steps in processing. By the end of the manufacturing process there is not enough thimerosal left in the vaccine to act as a preservative and the vaccine is labeled "preservative-free".
Thimerosal is mercury based, if you have allergies or sensitivity this is a problem. In the body it is metabolized to Ethylmercury.
