Last month (June) I had my period on the 5th, (my periods generally last 3 days) and then the 14th of June I again had my period. My boyfriend and I do not have unprotected sex seeing as just 4 months ago we just had a baby and we want to wait till he is a bit older to have another one. However this month (July) I have yet to start my period. If I go from the 5th I should have started on July 3rd and if I go by the 14th I should start tomorrow. However; I have no symptoms of starting. Around the 3rd I had the PMS crankiness and the cramping, and the a few days ago I had the same thing. I'm not nervous that I might be pregnant because I was having kidney problems and I had to have surgery due to that (June 23rd) and my boyfriend and I have only had sex 2 times in the last 3 months. Once was just the night before last and once was just a few weeks ago. However; once again protection was used. What could this be? Please help!!!

Thanks for your quick response Rosa! See this is my second child; I have a 3 year old son as well; and I never went through any changes in my periods (obviously its like they say no child is the same well same goes for pregnancy) however my period was back to being regular after having my second son a little over 4 months ago. I'm wondering if maybe it could be messed up due to the surgeries I've had to undergo and healing processes and antibiotics and pain medication? Also another quick question to go along; due to the fact that I had my period twice last month (June) is it a possibility that it may just completely skip this month (July) altogether?

Newmama,

Surgeries, illnesses, medications can ALL have an impact on your period. Stress is another major factor that can affect your period. Since you mentioned being on antibiotics, if you are currently still on them remember to use a condom because they decrease effectiveness of birth control pills (if you are on BCP).

When did you have surgery? It can certainly be the cause of your period irregularities. If you feel like there MAY be a chance of pregnancy, take a pregnancy test if you don't have a period by the end of this week. But it can be very likely that the combination of medications and surgery are the cause of your irregular period right now.

I had surgery on June 23rd. Also June 11th, I ended up being taken to emergency by ambulance. My right kidney was failing. For about 3 weeks before that I could not eat anything except for a little bit of watermelon here and there. And anything I did eat or drink within 5 minutes it would have came back up. From May 31st to June 11th (when I ended up in emergency) I had lost over 18 lbs. My second son was born March 5th, and March 18th I ended up in emergency in Halifax with kidney stones. They inserted a stent to keep my ureter opened. June 11th when I ended up in emergency I was in the hospital where I live till the 13th when I was transferred to a larger hospital facility. They managed to get the kidney stone attacks under control (at this point my kidney was failing and was poisoning me) by inserting a tube through my back into my kidney which allowed my kidney to drain. Then on the 23rd of June I had to go back they took out a 20 mm stone and about 10 other stones fairly large in size as well. Friday July 8th, they removed my stitches and removed a new stent they inserted after my surgery. Since then I have had no more kidney stone attacks and I actually feel myself again. Could this be what cause my period to come twice last month and so far not at all this month?

I definitely think that this could be the reason--- even more so since you lost so much weight in such a short period of time. Your body undergoing all those changes from the surgery and your failing kidney has had a huge impact on your overall health. Now that you are on your way to recovering, you should be getting your period more regularly but give it some time. You may still have a few more irregular periods here and there but remember that as your health returns to its norm, so will your menstrual cycle.

Best Wishes,

Rosa

Hi NewMomma,

Welcome to Empowher and thanks for posting. Since you recently had a baby, sometimes when your period comes back it can be irregular. This may take a few months or a little longer to become regular again. I can say from personal experience that I went from a 28 day cycle before kids to a 31-35 day cycle now and that is what is now my "normal" cycle. But even if your cycle changes, you should go back to a once a month period soon. If not, you may want to give your doctor a call and schedule an appointment.

All the best,

Rosa
